The brain is growing at an astonishing rate – around 100 new brain cells every minute. Hands and feet appear as tiny paddles. The kidneys are forming, and the umbilical cord now links the embryo to the developing placenta.

Your uterus has roughly doubled in size, though no one can see it yet. Extra saliva, bloating and constipation are common as progesterone relaxes smooth muscle throughout the body.

Contact your doctor or go to hospital straight away if you notice:
- Heavy vaginal bleeding or passing clots
- Severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain or fainting (possible ectopic pregnancy)
- Vomiting so severe you can’t keep fluids down
- Fever above 38 °C or burning urination
