Your baby at 24 weeks

24 weeks is an important milestone: with intensive neonatal care, babies born now have a chance of survival. The lungs are forming branches and surfactant-producing cells. The face is almost fully formed, and regular sleep–wake cycles are developing.

Your body at 24 weeks

Your belly may itch as the skin stretches. Tingling or numbness in the hands (carpal tunnel) can occur from fluid retention.

  • The glucose tolerance test (75 g OGTT) is usually done between 24 and 28 weeks.

Contact your doctor or go to hospital straight away if you notice:

  • Any vaginal bleeding or fluid leak
  • Regular tightenings or period-like cramps before 37 weeks
  • Severe headache, blurred vision or sudden swelling of face and hands
  • Fever, or pain while urinating
