What does a gynecologist do?
An obstetrician-gynaecologist (MS or MD in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, or DNB/DGO) looks after you through pregnancy, delivery and the weeks after birth. Many also manage fertility problems, PCOS and high-risk pregnancies. Most women in India see the same doctor from the first visit to delivery, so it’s worth choosing carefully.
What to look for
- Registration with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council – ask for the registration number
- A postgraduate qualification in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (MS, MD, DNB or DGO)
- Which hospital(s) they deliver at, and whether that hospital has a NICU and 24-hour anaesthesia
- Who covers for them when they are unavailable – nights, holidays, emergencies
- Their approach to normal delivery, epidurals and caesarean section
- Clinic timings, waiting times and how to reach them between visits
